Japanese Master Director Dares Something New

Family drama expert Hirokazu Koreeda’s latest film is a murder mystery thriller!

By Jérôme Brunner

Directing moving family dramas is Hirokazu Koreeda’s bread-and-butter subject. Indeed, he has become something of a regular guest with such stories at the world’s most important film festivals.

His feature film debut ‘Maborosi’ garnered not just one, but two awards when it screened at Venice in 1995. The film tells the story of a young family’s attempt to cope with life after the husband and father commits suicide.

The Japanese director has now taken a different route for his twelfth feature. ‘The Third Murder’ is a murder mystery thriller with a typical who’s-the-murderer formula. The film focuses on a lawyer who questions the validity of his client’s confession to murder, thus leading him to bring the real truth to light.

You can see for yourself whether the 55-year-old director is versatile enough to prove himself in a genre not his ‘own’ at the 13th Zurich Film Festival.

"The Third Murder" is screened as Gala Premiere at the Zurich Film Festival.
